"neue räume 17": Go Switzerland, go Trio!

The German-Swiss friendship between the manufacturer COR and the designers of team form ag from Hinwil has existed since the 1970s and produced the newly edited seating furniture, Trio. The young classic's success story continues, as can be seen at the design fair "neue räume" (new rooms) in Zurich.

By its very nature, the international furniture brand COR is dedicated to an elementary seating pleasure. Its easy chairs, sofas and upholstered chairs are widely considered to be "haute couture" when it comes to design and masterly workmanship. Every piece of furniture is made as a unique item in the manufactory in East Westphalia. "We are increasingly conquering the hearts of the Swiss as a living nation," explains René Wullschleger, who represents COR in Switzerland. He names the simple geometric sofa Trio – how could it be otherwise – as the most prominent ambassador for the "new rooms". The first draft (team form ag, 1972) was already so forward-looking that its design with only three basic elements and typical details such as the double outer seam still delights people to this day. The interior has evolved further with a solid beech wood frame, and the seat heights and depths have become more generous. Its diversity and combinability have been retained, and at the exhibition in Zurich it awakens a new desire for fine leather. The natural material is particularly refined when combined with high-quality fabrics.

Thinking outside the box for new rooms

Upholstered benches can also serve to illustrate how aesthetic rooms or zones are created using seating furniture. For their Mell concept, the designers Jehs+Laub simply thought outside the box. Separate seat cushions resting on top and well-padded backrests create a sofa look rather than being reminiscent of an uncomfortable corner bench. The new development is ideal for integration into the open floor plans of apartments or office areas: as a cosy meeting place for people to sit together, whether they are cooking and eating, debating, working or playing. Together with a CONIC table and Jalis chairs, the result is round tables that do not appear plush and fit in well with contemporary architecture. The fabric covers in fir and mint green also look fresh and modern.

Sitting culture with architecture

Reading, watching TV, chatting, surfing the web or just relaxing! To meet these needs, the Italian design studio Metrica has recently created Pilotis, upholstered furniture with an architectural periphery. Its spatial surroundings are formed quite playfully by adding round or cornered side tables, shelf-like storage spaces or a few extra stools. The complete lounge concept comprises sofa and lounger elements, some of which have sloping surfaces, and of course cosy back or armrest cushions. And last but not least, it surprises with its fine metal feet that will remind some design connoisseurs of Le Corbusier's constructions. But in 2017 we no longer have to think in classical-modern terms or just in black and white. Powdery fabric colours and cognac or camel for the leather upholstery are very en vogue: Go Switzerland!
